Poster Contest Winners!

GA Derm poster contest winners May is Skin Cancer Awareness month. In an effort to educate children about the seriousness of this disease and how it can be avoided, Georgia Dermatology Center has a poster contest each year with the help of Forsyth Elementary schools. This year there were 230 entries submitted and 10 area elementary schools participated.

“Picking the winning entries was really hard this year said “Dr. Alexander Gross. “We have some really talented young artists in Forsyth County! We did pick the winner, Lacy Chamberlain from Chestetee Elementary and the two runners up were Meredith Edwards a from Chattahoochee Elementary and Sarah Wilson from Shiloh Elementary.” School nurses, Connie Trent and Sherry Bottorf helped with the project.

Sin cancer awareness month is a time to increase the understanding of how important the prevention, early detection, and treatment of skin cancer. Each year, approximately 2 million people in the US are diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancers (mostly basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas). While death rates from nonmelanoma skin cancers are low, this type of cancer can cause damage and disfigurement if left untreated. Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and takes the lives of thousands each year.

Best advice for protecting your skin is to apply plenty of sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and remember to apply every 2 hours. You might also consider grabbing a hat and sunglasses as well! Have fun in the sun but be safe! The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have deemed May 25th this year as DON’T FRY DAY, and they encourage folks to Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap! When spending time outdoors. Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen of SPF of 15 or higher, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses.
